WEIGHT LOSS SUPPLEMENTS

SWEETENERS

Information: weight loss supplements. Low-calorie sweeteners provide a sweet taste with few or no accompanying calories.

Before being approved by the FDA for use in the United States, sweeteners must undergo extensive safety testing. All FDA-approved low-calorie sweeteners meet the same standard of safety. They are safe for consumption by pregnant women and children.

The six intense, low-calorie sweeteners currently approved for use in the United States are acesulfame potassium (Ace-K), aspartame, neotame, saccharin, sucralose, and tagatose.

The FDA is considering petitions to approve other low-calorie sweeteners for use in the U.S. food supply: alitame and cyclamate. Both alitame and cyclamate have been approved for use in numerous other countries.
